🏥 Integration Engineer – NHS Interoperability (HL7 / FHIR / Cerner)

📍 Location: Remote (UK-based)

🕒 £535 Outside IR35

💼 Duration: Until March 2026

✨ About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Integration Engineer with a deep understanding of NHS interoperability standards to join our growing health technology team. The ideal candidate will play a key role in designing, developing, and maintaining secure, robust integrations between healthcare systems, including national NHS infrastructure, EHR platforms, and third-party applications.

You’ll work closely with product teams, clinical stakeholders, and technical partners to deliver interoperability solutions that enhance patient care, reduce friction, and support digital transformation within the NHS.

🧰 Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain integrations using HL7FHIR, and other NHS interoperability standards.
  • Develop interfaces to support data exchange with Cerner, other EHRs, and NHS national systems.
  • Implement, configure, and maintain interface engines and APIs for secure data exchange.
  • Collaborate with NHS Trusts, ICBs, and system suppliers to ensure compliance with NHS England interoperability frameworks.
  • Troubleshoot integration issues, ensuring high system reliability, resilience, and data integrity.
  • Contribute to integration documentation, technical specifications, and support handover materials.
  • Participate in interoperability testing (Unit, SIT, UAT), deployment, and monitoring of live services.
  • Support adoption of modern integration patterns (e.g., RESTful APIs, event-driven architecture) and help modernise legacy HL7 interfaces.

🧠 Required Skills & Experience

  • Proven track record working with NHS integration standards and protocols:
  • HL7 (v2.x & v3)
  • FHIR (R4 preferred)
  • CDA and other NHS messaging standards.
  • Strong hands-on experience integrating with or configuring Cerner Millennium or similar EHR platforms.
  • Experience with NHS messaging infrastructures (e.g., MESH, Spine, GP Connect, e-Referrals).
  • Familiarity with healthcare data structures and information governance requirements.
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language (e.g., Python, Java, C#, JavaScript).
  • Knowledge of interface engines (e.g., Rhapsody, Mirth Connect, Ensemble).
  • Experience with API development and integration (REST/JSON).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

🌟 Desirable Skills

  • Experience with cloud-based integrations (e.g., Azure, AWS).
  • Exposure to other EHRs (e.g., EMIS, Epic, TPP).
  • Experience working in Agile delivery teams.
  • Knowledge of NHS digital transformation programmes and interoperability initiatives.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.
